Spring 2011 Walk

2011 marked the 10th anniversary of the listing of the Monte Vista and College View Historic District in the National Register of Historic Places.

On Sunday, May 15, reDiscover Nob Hill commemorated the listing with its spring walking tour, exploring the architectural legacy of the district and recounting the events that led to the listing.  The walk was led by noted architectural historian David Kammer who authored the nomination.

Walkers learned to “read” houses along the route and heard how you can research the history of your Nob Hill house.

Our Spring 2010 walking tour exploring the architectural legacy of our residential neighborhoods took place on June 12. Led again by noted architectural historian David Kammer, the walk explored the 1926 College View Addition. Walkers learned to “read” houses along the route and how to research the history of their house. The walk ended at a 1931 Mediterranean house on Hermosa NE where we saw how the owners have preserved the historic character of their unique house. reDiscover Nob Hill welcomes your ideas about routes and topics of special interest to you for future walks. Contribute your ideas here on the website. Thank you to the Nob Hill Neighborhood Association for publicizing the walk.

Fall 2009 Walk

In October 2009 reDiscover Nob Hill held its fall walking tour of the architecture and history of Nob Hill in Albuquerque. Led by architectural historian David Kammer, the walk focused on the eastern portion of the 1916 University Heights subdivision south of Central Avenue and east of Girard Boulevard.

A number of residents in this subdivision have expressed interest to the neighborhood association and to City Councilor Rey Garduño in completing the historic survey begun in 1994 which would document information about each house’s construction, style, and contribution to the historic character of the neighborhood. A survey would help residents determine whether the area qualifies for listing as a historic district and whether they want to pursue listing in the State Register of Cultural Places. (Listing of a district or a property in the state or national register does not limit an owner's right to modify it.  They are, rather, registers of cultural resources considered worthy of preservation.)

On the walk David talked about how such surveys are done and discussed how to read houses for original features and distinguish between original and later features. He discussed how certain remodeling and maintenance can preserve historic character and how others can diminish it.

Thank you to The Flower Shop at Nob Hill, on Wellesley SE next to Kelly’s, for allowing us to meet in front of their shop.

We are grateful to Nick and Donna Pisano for sharing their lovely historic patio for our reception at the conclusion of the walk.

Spring 2009 Walk

On Sunday, May 17, 2009, reDiscover Nob Hill hosted its Spring walking tour of the historic architecture of Nob Hill in Albuquerque. The walk commemorated the 10th anniversary of the listing of the Monte Vista and College View Historic District in the NM Register of Cultural Places in 1999. 45 walkers learned to read architectural details and identify the most popular residential architectural styles found here with noted architectural historian David Kammer and explored some interesting people who have lived and worked in the area. The walk lasted 2 hours and covered about 2 miles.

Teacher Jeff Tuttle  and his two daughters offered a look inside the nationally registered 1930 Mediterraean style Monte Vista Elementary School. Huge thanks to them. We ended at a historic area home to enjoy refreshments in the shady yard.
